Album: Greece, 2002In May of 2002, Rex and I finally went on our belated Honeymoon. We spent about a week traveling around Greece on our own, and then began a week-long horseback tour on the Pelion Peninsula. We arrived in Athens on May 18 and immediately (well, as quickly as we could considering the number of times we got lost and the language barrier) got onto a bus for Nafplio, a small coastal town on Peloponnese. We spent 3 nights and 2 days there, walking up the 999 steps to one of the fortresses in town, staying in a small apartment next to the walls of the other fortress, and renting a scooter to visit Tiryns, Argos and Ancient Mycenae.
On the morning of May 22, we got up early to catch a bus back to Athens. From there we took a taxi to the port of Pireaus, where, after a really long wait, we caught the ferry to Santorini in the Cyclades. We arrived there at 5:00am the next morning! After a long nap, we rented a scooter and explored the entire island, from the town of Oia to Cape Akrotiri. We saw black sand beaches, and a red sand beach. The next day, we cruised through the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. We also took a boat ride to the hot springs at Palia Kameni (I swam to them through the very cold Aegean Sea) and hiked up to the crater on Nea Kameni. Standing in the middle of an active volcano was somewhat anticlimactic - there was no lava!
The next morning, we took a plane back to Athens, and spent the afternoon taking in the ancient sites. We walked through the Acropolis (covered in scaffolding), the Ancient Agora and Roman Agora, several of which had some small but interesting museums. After a relaxing night at the Sofitel, we met our tour group and took off for the Pelion Peninsula, where we spent a week on horseback.
